As of January 15, 2015 The Department of Ecology issued a letter stating that the department has reviewed documentation of work performed under the Consent Decree. The Department notified the Port of Sunnyside that the requirements of the Consent Decree have been satisfactorily completed persuant to section XXVVII of that Decree. The Port can move forward with work on the Carnation site now that the requirements of the groundwater treatment and soil removal study have been completed. We will continue to look for potential partnerships in taking down the damaged building.
The state has awarded a grant in the amount of $450,000 from the 2016 Capital Budget to help fund the demolition of the Carnation plant. The Port Commission also approved spending $13,500 to help finance the demolition. Plans remain in place to preserve the historical Carnation tower.
